Michael I can only say that a few years ago I heard someone say that racism is dead.  I disputed that cause so many have been racist to me (to them I am a supposed “Mexican”) and others (including my God-granddaughter who is half Columbian).  Racism has been very alive and well but suppressed until “number 45”.  So imagine an American (even “white”) chaplain coming into your room and being treated as you say “with human decency” and be surprised in a good way.  I can’t tell you how many Wiccans, LGTBQ people, etc. that I have surprised by my (trying) to treat them with “human decency” (even when I get things wrong).  As ministers we can be those oasises of hope and safety from prejudice.
