Hi Mary, thanks for these reflections as we begin wrapping up our course. I agree that because the “Church” has been placed on such a pedastal, supposedly beyond reproach, lots of spiritual abuse has not only been permitted and condoned, but enabled and encouraged. Unfortunately, some of it is even institutionalized in our rituals and exclusive language. I sometimes get so discouraged about this that I give up on the church, but like we discussed in a previous thread with Joy, we still need a spiritual community, as flawed as it is. So for now, I keep trying to promote change from within…

Very interesting case study regarding the man who needed baptism by immersion. Most religious groups I am familiar with make exceptions and accommodations for people who are sick or frail. This is extraordinary, for sure. Certainly worth it if it allowed the man to die in peace, though.
