The impact an intervention like this can have is quite important.  Not very long ago I was with a pt’s family in the time of difficult decisions due to impending death. The woman was lesbian and engaged to be married, this was also an interracial couple, partner was African American. The pt’s fiance had been fairly quiet and withdrawn from the rest of the family group, I had an opportunity to be at the bedside of pt alone with her and ask her about how they met, when the wedding was supposed to be, the plans for the future that she was grieving.  It was the most I had seen her talk or show emotion, or make eye contact.  Instinct told me that this was an important conversation that we had.
