Mary, great insights about the physician, the chaplain’s level of trust that must have developed with the surviving partner, and the role of church vs no-church. I too was struck by the high degree of anxiety attached to having to reach out to the deceased’s parents, given the conflict or at least estrangement apparently present. I don’t know if there would have been a stronger role for the chaplain to play in that part of the scenario or not. Perhaps just the validation of how hard that was, and the supportive presence giving the survivor courage to get it over with.
