Reflection on Melanie’s article:

It was insightful to connect the similarities between domestic violence and spiritual abuse in how they are experienced by the abused. It creates a context for understanding why someone may stay in a spiritually abusive situation.

The two different models for how spiritual abuse recovery may be experienced was very helpful.  It clearly lays out how more acute and traumatic abuse has a different recovery trajectory than those who are in a place of experiencing minder forms of unhealthy religion.  It clearly is not a one size fits all situation and needs careful assessment.

I appreciated what the article says about the unique skills and opportunities chaplains will have to start the process of perhaps exiting spiritually abusive situations and starting the recovery process.  Because we function in more non-traditional roles of ministry we are in unique place to create safe and trusting spaces and relationships for the recovery process to begin.
