I just read “I think I Know What You Mean.” It was an excellent reminder that I may think I know what you said and may respond with proper Rogerian reflective listening and assuming my inferences are correct, but there be a lot more going on. “The speaker may misinterpret, misquote, misread, and misconstrue what the speaker is saying.” (p.12 in Listening and Caring Skills.) This can be especially true for me as I have practiced my listening skills and think, “I’m pretty good at this,” which of course opens me up for a strong possibility of missing something.
