Welcome to the Caring Presence Program. This course is divided into two Modules, presented here as Lessons, that are designed to educate people to help others through a mind, body and spirit perspective. The CPP, formerly known as the Congregational Care Network is the Oates Institute’s online training that provides lay spiritual caregivers with

  • Increased skills for empathic listening, non-possessive warmth, and caring responses
  • Help hurting people process grief and loss
  • Spiritual understanding of caring
  • Practical tips on self-care, boundary setting, and referral
  • Convenient, affordable, compassionate learning

Purpose

There are natural caregivers in every organization / congregation that feels lured or called to reach out in compassionate, non-judgmental ways to persons who are under stress from all kinds of life situations. This online program is designed (something like the Stephen Ministries) to enable lay persons to increase their understanding and skills in providing spiritual / pastoral lay care.  Under the supervision of a staff member, lay persons are trained to respond in respective ways to a variety of kinds of need.  There is an opportunity for a person to get a certificate of completion if they take the six modules.  However, a person may take one or more modules without completing the certificate of completion.  Organizations / congregations invest the following fees in order for persons to participate.  Since the Oates Institute is a nonprofit organization, it depends on these fees and donations to ensure the program is affordable.

Facilitators

Each module is facilitated / taught by experienced spiritual caregivers / counselors. Past CPP facilitators were:

  • Rick Underwood, D. Div. & Executive Director, Wayne Oates Institute
  • Karen Lovett, M. Div.

Logistics

Each Module is one month in duration. Each week reading assignments will be made with an opportunity to post via our Module Forum Threads thoughts, questions, concerns, and examples from the readings.  The facilitator invites participants via our Module Forum Threads to interact about the posted materials. All conversations are confidential. Reading, reflection, posting and responding to posts can be done at the participant’s convenience and requires approximately one to two hours a week.

Module 1 – Introduction to Caring Presence

Module 2 – Boundaries, Self-Care and Referrals

Module 3 – Spiritual Care Visits to Patients in Hospital, Rehab, or Acute Care Nursing Home
